Das Ziel der Mannschaft von STS-117 ist die weitere Entwicklung der ISS und Wechsel die Mannschaft der ISS. Shuttel soll das europäische Forschungsmodul Columbus zur Raumstation bringen. Leopold Eyharts — das dritte Mitglied der 16. langfristigen Expedition ISS. Er bleibt auf die Station auf einigen Monaten.
